Dhaka could have become a floating paradise city like Venice and Amsterdam
Venice, the capital of the Veneto region in northeastern Italy, stands on 118 small islands. The expanse of canals has made Venice known around the world as the ‘floating city’.
There are no motorized vehicles or cars in the city. The only means of transportation and travel within the city is by boat.
The main attraction for tourists there is the wooden boat ride. Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is also called the Venice of the North for its canals.
When the call of clouds is heard piercing the sky, peace descends on many cities around the world, like Venice or Amsterdam. But when clouds gather in Dhaka, the faces of 20 million people become gloomy.
With just a little heavy rain, the highway turns into a river, and the alleys become death traps. A pitiful sigh escapes from Dhaka’s chest due to the traffic jams that remain stagnant for hours, broken vehicles, closed educational institutions and the helplessness of the people confined to their homes. Even though the same scene is repeated year after year, there is no escape from the cursed cycle of waterlogging. Why Dhaka keeps getting flooded again and again despite the tide of so-called and arbitrary ‘development’ of the last 17 years has now become a bigger question than crores of taka.
